Whose hand is on the wheel of your life?

God woke me last night to talk to me about, of all things, ‘backseat drivers’.

Yikes anyone know any? Not me surely!

He spoke to me about the tiredness and weariness of many who have been back seat driving and are exhausted from doing things in their own strength.

Matt 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

He said that “some have been telling me which way to turn and their hands have even been reaching over for the wheel.

When this happens it’s like driving blind because you don’t know the route, only I do. You might think you have a good idea but you don’t know the turns in the road ahead like I do. It may even feel safe to you because you are in charge and don’t have to give control to me and trust me”.

In the picture I could see that some have actually put on their proverbial driving gloves like they mean business!

For others they are now foot to the floor because they don’t want to loose momentum and they want to get where they think they’re going.

It feel like God had become the designated passenger in your car.

For others the petrol tank is dangerously close to empty but the cost of stopping is so high as you are making headway and leaving others in your wake.

It also felt like the cost of stopping was a very real fear for some but because of the literal cost of filling up a tank of petrol in the current climate. The fear was keeping you foot to the floor to keep working and trying to make ends meet.

I felt God say that by taking over the wheel we had put Him in the passenger seat and that was never what was intended for us. It’s not our responsibility it’s His to do the driving. Because of this responsibility and doing things in our own strength the journey had become so hard and people were worn out and in danger of crashing.

As you read this take a moment to stop and ask God where you are in this picture, or maybe it’s so obvious you don’t need to ask.

Let’s take a moment to stop and ask the Father about the areas of our lives where we’ve been taking responsibility and control.

It’s time for action and activation….

What do you need to surrender to God?

It’s time to repent and change the way we have been thinking about the over responsibility we feel we have and the striving to make things happen for us to live the lives we’re called to.

Then we are going to surrender those things one by one and give the wheel back to God.

In this moment of surrender He is going to exchange the weariness and striving and exchange it for peace and joy as you get to lean back and enjoy the view and focus on other things you may have neglected as you’ve been so caught up with the drive.

The last thing He said which made me laugh was that the L plates that you have on a car when you’re learning to drive are actually a badge of honour! They stand for ‘Learner for Life’ and we don’t graduate from learner to something higher as we never fully reach the end of what there is to learn. They are a badge of honour when we realise that we’re fully dependent on the driver and always will be.

So sit back and enjoy the ride and take time to take in the view-the pressure is off!
