Do you feel like you’re running on empty?

Do you feel like you're running on empty-

As I was listening to the preach at church today, about the Holy Spirit, I felt God say, ‘there are people today who are running on empty‘. He then showed me a red flashing light that was a warning sign, like the one you might see when your phone has gone into the red and it’s nearly out of life! You know what that’s like don’t you! The panic that you’re nearly out of charge, not near a plug to recharge and almost cut off from ALL civilisation (slightly dramatic I know, but not that far from the truth I feel where it comes to using our phones).

We start to get the ‘panic’ and look frantically around for a spot to plug-in. We have even started to carry round a back-up power supply should this happen, but these need to be kept charged as well! No-one wants to be off line and not able to check their emails, texts, Facebook, Insta or Snapchat accounts. There could be an urgent message or call, right?  I’m sure it’s not just me?

He then reminded me of my cooker and how it started to go wrong last week. We turned it on, put the food in and all seemed well, until the power supply in the house was shorted out. Puzzled, we went back to the oven and tried again, and low and behold the power supply went off again in the house. This was a warning to us that there was something wrong with this appliance and it was very soon going to stop working altogether.

This proved to be true a day later when we turned it on and there was a little heat but not what we expected and then we realised that the fan was not working, and as it’s a fan assisted oven it’s fairly important for the fan to actually work. The funny thing is, it still looked like an oven, it still warmed up (a bit) like an oven, but it wasn’t actually able to function at its true capacity as an oven and was therefore about as much use as a chocolate teapot! Which is not much by the way! The oven was not fit for purpose, even though it might not have been apparent judging by the outward appearance, and this is what God was saying about some of you today.

We, like the phones/electrical devices in our homes, need to be constantly filled up or plugged in to function at our best and remain fit for purpose.

What good are we to the ‘world’ if we are not constantly connected to the life/power source-God?

We need to be running at full capacity to do all that we have been created for. When we try and do things under our own strength and strive hard to make life happen we burn out and quickly run out of steam or become overwhelmed. This is not God’s intended best for us.

Zech 4:6 So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.

His best for us is to be plugged into the source and the amazing thing is that we can do this anywhere, as He is living inside us, totally accessible and portable. Wherever we are, so is He.

Our power supply comes direct from the Holy Spirit and He is more than able and more than willing to keep us topped up, even over-flowing, with His mighty power if we ask Him. Even though we know this to be true, so often we don’t live like this is true and forget or sadly don’t even acknowledge His ability to ‘charge us up’.

Jesus promised us that the Holy Spirit would come:

Acts 1:8 ‘But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere-in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth’.

Wow, the only way we could do what Jesus talks about is if we are clothed in power!

Sadly, unlike the phone we don’t get a flashing visual reminder warning us to plug into the source before we lose all power. But, if we’re honest the signs have probably been there for a while? The red flashing light moments that may look different for all of us, that we try and ignore, hoping it will go away because we just don’t have time right now to attend to it.

Have you been paying attention to the warning signs in your life?

Do you need to stop and rest, refuel and recharge?

Maybe you are feeling disconnected today and feel like you haven’t been hearing God’s voice or perhaps you are struggling with believing wrong thoughts or lies about yourself or others, doing things you are not proud of or other stuff that is making you feel bad about yourself. As we lose power and connection with Father God these things quickly take over our lives and our thought patterns and we forget what it’s like to be fully functioning and we settle for this lesser version of ourselves.

Or maybe you have just been trying so hard to keep it all together because everybody needs you to, they’re relying on you and you haven’t been taking any time for yourself and you literally are running on empty right now?

How long is it since you felt fully charged? Have you forgotten what it feels like to be running at full capacity?

Today my prayer for you is that you ‘plug’ back into the source and spend time with the Father letting Him remind you of who you are and how much He loves you. I pray that the Holy Spirit would refill, refresh and rejuvenate the purposes and plans God has for you and all that you are called to be in a world that needs you to be the very best version of yourself.

1Pet 5:7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Remember you were never meant to go it alone, you are not Superman or Superwoman, you are human, and humans need rest to function well. You are also not a machine and cannot keep going without stopping to recharge your batteries.

Please don’t ignore the warning signs God may be giving you today. He really does have the best plans and purposes for your life and He wants to partner in it with you.

Much love friends xx

      1. It’s funny wrote what you did because I posted earlier today about being spiritually deficient and how only Jesus can fill that gap. Yet we constantly try to fill it with earthly things that never satisfy us. Your post has encouraged me that I was right to post what I did. I think God sent us a similar message today. 🙏🏻
