Have you ever wondered how some people just seem to hear from God? Or, have you ever thought why doesn’t God speak to me?
You may even believe the lie that God would not want to speak to you at all and if he did it would only be to tell you off!
First of all let me say that there are some big fat, whopping lies in those thoughts you may be having!
God chose you because he adores you and he wants to partner with you and use you to show his love to the world around you and introduce them to His son Jesus and be love to all those you meet. God is a loving father and wants to teach you and help you become all he has called you to be and not to tell you off! He is the most perfect example of a loving parent you could ever imagine and he wants to help you become more like his son Jesus, little by little, day by day.
Maybe your view of God, the lens you see him through, has been skewed by your upbringing and your own experience of an earthly father?
Maybe you struggle to see him as a good, good father?
If this is resonating with you I encourage you to talk it through with someone who can pray with you and help you to receive a personal revelation of how much your heavenly father loves you and wants you to bask in that love. He wants to redeem the unhappy memories you have of your childhood and for you to know that he would never hurt you, leave you or forget about you. He has your name written on the palm of his hand, in fact it’s engraved which means it can’t be removed.
Isaiah 49:16 See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.
So, for God to mould us into the image of his precious son Jesus he needs to talk with us and for us to listen for his still small voice in the everyday. It’s as simple as that!
The best way to hear God is to spend time with him in the ‘Secret Place’. This is the place where you and God can spend quality time together, uninterrupted.
Ps 91:1. ‘He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of The Almighty.’
I love this phrase, ‘the secret place’ as it speaks of an intimacy and this is what it’s all about for developing a relationship with God where you can hear him and it becomes a two way chat with your ‘dad’. This is where you learn to listen to him and you need to be still and allow time where you are unhindered or distracted by all the other ‘stuff’.
If you have more time available to you it’s great to spend time ‘soaking‘ with God and enjoying just being in his presence, for no other reason than that. It’s not to bring a list of prayer requests but to allow him to do the talking. It’s brilliant to develop this discipline in your life to really allow yourself time to marinate in his presence with no agenda other than to enjoy being together and getting to know each other better, day by day.
Everybody has their own ‘special place’ that they can escape to where they can be still and ready to hear from God.
Where is your special place?
Psalm 46:10 He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God’.
When I spend time with God, often just in the quiet of my room, I have found having a notebook to hand is helpful for two reasons:
1. So I can record what God says as it’s so easy to forget after the moment has passed. You always think you will remember it all but how quickly the enemy would come along and snatch it away.
2. If I have other thoughts (which often happens as things from the day or things to do pop into my head) that keep invading my head space I write them down so I can focus back on him and come back to those thoughts or my to-do list later.
I personally love writing down or ‘journaling’ with God and if you are going to do this I recommend you date your journals so you can look back and see when God spoke to you, about what and as a visible reminder to yourself that you are hearing from him and that he is faithful in what he says he is going to do. It really helps build your faith and makes you more grateful as you see him at work in your life and the way he can work through you.
I am a big fan of journaling and as I have got more into writing down my thoughts and feelings and what God is saying I started drawing in my journals too (I am a visual learner and this is often how God speaks to me).
This has now developed further and I have started bible journaling where I paint in my bible as God speaks to me through the scripture I am reading. It is such a delightful way to express what you feel God is saying and is such a freedom. It has unleashed the creative in me and I love it! It has really made me hungry to get into his word more and this can only be a good thing.
I have been inspired by other bible journallers, particularly on Insta, who post their pages as an encouragement to others. They are absolutely stunning to look at. I find them very inspirational and I love to be creative so they tick all the boxes for me.
I have included some of my most recent pages below. If you want to know more you can check out my new bible journaling page. Find it located on the home page or tap on the link.
Go and have a look on Insta, just type ‘Illustrated faith’ or ‘Messy bible’ or use Google and prepare to be amazed!
You may be struggling to hear God’s voice for yourself and maybe you have just never understood how God speaks to you. Perhaps you are expecting an audible voice and God most certainly does speak to people in an audible voice but that hasn’t happened to me yet, but I’m excited and expectant that one day he might.
Next time I will write about the different ways God speaks to us but for now go and enjoy some quiet time with Papa and see what you hear.
John 10:27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
