This is part three of the ‘What’s your Key?’ series about exploring what you can do to step into all that God has for you.
So, you may or not know but God speaks to us today and is speaking to you.
Are you aware of God speaking to you? Have you tuned in to God’s frequency?
God loves to speak to us and is speaking to us all the time if we listen carefully. But because God is God He can and does speak to us all in an individual way. God created us all to be unique and different and this is reflected in our relationship with Him. So, that means He will speak to each of us in a way that is particular to us and is part and parcel of our unique relationship with Him.
By His Holy Spirit God speaks to us to encourage us and those around us and potentially open up an opportunity to bring them into an encounter with the Father. You may be at the beginning of your journey in hearing God for yourself or maybe not, but I would like to share 5 ways in which God can communicate with us. These are all linked to our senses, which make them nice and easy to remember and really when you think about it of course He would use our senses to communicate with us.
Just as we have a physical body we also have a ‘spirit body’ so God will use the spirit body and senses within it to get our attention just like your father would in the natural. I know as a parent it sometimes seems like your children don’t hear you at all and have some sort of selective hearing so I think we are pretty much the same with God. We can choose to listen in or let Him talking to us wash over us which sounds so rude but if we don’t know how to tune in then it’s no real surprise.
Imagine a radio if you will and finding a channel you like listening to. Well, in our house we are always re-tuning the car stereo to different stations depending on who is in the car because we all like completely different music. It’s a bit like that with hearing from God. You have to tune in to his frequency and if you don’t pay attention you can easily miss it even though it transmits 24/7.
We hear Him as we see what He says in scripture. This is one of the main ways God speaks to us. When toy are reading the bible ask the Holy Spirit to highlight or draw your attention to something that He wants you to learn or get a deeper revelation or understanding of. He can literally make a verse or word seem to light up or almost jump off the page to get your attention.
We might also see visions, pictures or images. These can be just fleeting images that flash across our mind and often because it is so fast we can quickly dismiss it or think we have just had our own thought, when it is God bringing something into your mind. It can equally be like a short film playing in front of your eyes that you can just sort of watch. Or you may even look at someone and see words ‘written’ above them, for example it might be a word that reveals something they are suffering with like depression, self- harming or it could be a word that God wants to use to prophesy identity over them like catalyst or pioneer. Hopefully you get the idea.
Acts 2:17-21 In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
When we think of hearing God’s voice we often think it will be an audible voice and it will sound like Morgan Freeman or something (not just me is it?) God definitely can speak with an audible voice but this is not as common and I personally haven’t heard Him in this way, but I would like to. We hear His voice through what we hear, with our physical ears and our ‘spiritual senses’. This just means within us we feel like we are hearing God as it resonates within us often when someone is speaking. Often His words come as flashing thoughts, sentences or even single words. Or you may hear a scripture in your spiritual ears.
John 10:27-30 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
We hear Him through the words we speak, inspired by the Holy Spirit in the moment as we speak them and from other people as they speak to us. God can at any moment inspire the words someone says to us and communicate with us through them. Often we start talking to someone and then out of nowhere you find yourself saying something and you think to yourself where did that come from? I wasn’t even thinking that!
Has that ever happened to you?
It is simply God speaking through you. Allow yourself to turn your attention to Him and posture your heart towards God at any moment in your day and ask Him to help you in any situation and He will, a conversation is no different.
Matt 10:19-20 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
God speaks through our ‘gut feelings’ and intuition. We sense and feel that He is present in situations and places.
1 Cor 2:11For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
We hear Him as we remember with our minds what He has done and as He inspires our thoughts, dreams and imaginations.
1 Cor 2:9-10 However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” the things God has prepared for those who love him— these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
Once you realise you are hearing from God life gets very exciting! It completely changes how you go about your day as you hear from God He wants you to do something with it.
I also recommend you start writing down what you feel He is saying in a journal as this will help you keep track and when things happen you will be able to look back and see that He told you that already. It really builds your faith too.
So, start listening and find out next time what to do when you start hearing from God.
