Antiques in the Attic

What a strange title for a blog you might be thinking! But, God chose to speak to me through a picture of a dusty old attic and I got the phrase ‘antiques in the attic’ going over and over in my head.

In the picture there was a dark, cobwebby bedroom at the top of a house, the attic room and the ceilings were sloped on either side. There was a small window so it wasn’t very well lit and a big, old fashioned metal bed. Under the bed there were old fashioned suitcases covered in travel stickers and dust. There were shelves full of Knick knacks that were covered in cobwebs and the room looked untouched. The things in the room were not obvious at first but on closer inspection they were there hidden away and tucked into corners. It felt as if someone had walked out of the room one day and never come back.

My overriding thought as I saw this picture in my mind’s eye was sadness at a room so dark and dingy and full of ‘stuff’ that no-one got to see the stuff anymore because it had been forgotten about after being hidden so long and what a shame that it was just gathering dust.

I felt God say that he was going to come and do a deep clean, the sort of clean that we might refer to as a spring clean, basically a big clean, the kind that you only do once in a while because it is so thorough. I then saw him sweeping things away with a big old fashioned broom and getting right into the dark corners, the ones nobody notices, to sweep them clean.

I also saw him pulling suitcases out from under the bed, the well-worn suitcases that had been so well travelled (hence the travels stickers) and he was opening them up. There were things inside that had been shut away, hidden away and locked up.

Where things had been hidden in the room God knew exactly where to find them and he was bringing them out into the light one by one and examining them from all angles.

The things that were put away were hurt; shame, disappointment and a sense of dreams lost or put down. God was bringing them into the light so he could get to work on bringing freedom to the owner and re-igniting the dreams tucked at the back of the shelf.

Have you got things that need bringing out into the light so God can deal with them?

Have you been living in the dark to ashamed to talk about things from the past that have caused you hurt and pain? God wants you to walk in freedom today; he paid too high a price for you to stay locked up and in pain.

Psa 118:5 When hard pressed, I cried to the LORD; he brought me into a spacious place.

John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Have you had dreams that you have put away, from days gone by that you have almost forgotten about. Do they need the dust blowing off them today? He knows the desires of our hearts as he put them their in the first place.

Psa 37:4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires.

So, back to the ‘Antiques in the Attic’ title of this blog…

God then showed me that there were people who felt like something old and dusty you would find in an attic and that they considered themselves well past their shelf life or just insignificant in their surroundings compared to new brighter Knick knacks.

Maybe you have been looking around at other people and feel that you have nothing to offer or that you could never be like ‘them’. Or you have started to compare your journey with God with theirs and feel of little value to him.

Is this something you have been feeling?

God wants you to know that he considers you to be priceless and rare and of extremely high value. So much so, that he sent his one and only son to die in your place because he wanted to be in a right relationship with you, yes you!

John 3:16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

Just like the programme Antiques in the Attic, where things that were considered of little or no value were shoved away in the attic only to be re-discovered many years later,  you are going to be re-discovered and the people around you are going to see what a treasure they have amongst them. God has known this all along and it has never been in doubt.

So, dust yourself off today and get ready because you have a calling on your life and you are not something to be hidden away at the back of the shelf. You are a glorious treasure that God created and you WILL display God to all those in the world around you. You are the greatest treasure in the world and the pinnacle of this creation.
