Just the Mention of Your Name

just-the-mention-of-your-name

I was listening to the new album from Brian and Jenn Johnson called ‘After all these Years’ and was stopped in my tracks by the first song on the album-Mention of Your Name!

I have had it on repeat most of the day and the lyrics are fantastic and sum up the very precious and life changing power in the name of Jesus.

These are the lyrics from the start of the song and I find the chorus particularly powerful.

You’re here,

With the grace of a saviour,

With the heart of the Father,

You’re all we need.

You’re here,

With the hands of a healer,

With the power of the Spirit,

You’re all we need.

At the mention of the your name,

I know every chain will break,

Everything will change,

At the mention of your name.

Jesus,

Just the whisper of your name,

You silence wind and waves,

At the mention of your name.

It got me thinking about the amazing power in the name Jesus and how we should remember that when we are praying and that His name carries the ultimate authority on anything and in every situation.

Just the whisper of his name can break chains and bring life to situations and places. It is not to be used flippantly and in using the name you should expect things to happen. The very nature of the name carries power to bring things into being where they were dead.

It is a name that is above all other names and the bible tells us…

Phil 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

I then decided to look up the name of Jesus in the bible and found out that there are over 200 names and titles used for Jesus which gives us an indication of the significance of it.

The name and other titles used are divided into characteristics of his nature and here are just some of the most prominent ones,

I Am: John 8:58

The Son of God: John 1:34

The Way the Truth and the Life: John 14:6

Emmanuel: Isa: 6

True God: 1 John 5:20

Saviour: Matt 1:21

Lamb of God: John 1:29

Jehovah:  Isa 40:3

I can’t stop thinking about the power in the name and how I have sometimes prayed without really connecting with that fact and what that means for the words I’ve just uttered. I feel provoked to dwell on the very fact that just the whisper of His name can break chains and when I pray I need to remember whose I am and that I can use that name to break strongholds and my expectations for this should match accordingly.

Psa 107:13-14 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
14 He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness,
    and broke away their chains.

I need to raise my expectations and know that the name of Jesus sets the captives free, releases people into their destinies and is a mighty weapon against anything the enemy can throw at me. Listening to the song has really stirred my faith and it feels a bit like a battle cry and a love song mixed together in one.

Let all my life tell of who you are...

The last song on the album that is also resonating with me is called For the One. The line in it that stands out for me is ‘Let all my life tell of who you are’ and for me it is the cry of my heart.

I want my life to reflect my passion for Jesus and that I build my life on him. My hope is that people feel like they get a glimpse of Him through me as I go about my daily life and that’s the whole point that he is reflected as I go about my daily life and I don’t need to be a superstar Christian but myself and that we are all called to be ourselves wherever he has placed us. Then just shine in that place, no pressure because it’s what we’re born to do.

I have linked the songs to this post so you have a listen. I hope they bless you as much as they have blessed me.

  1. There is power in the name of Jesus. I love this post. I am going to get that song on Itunes so I can listen to it, This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible: John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
